Business manager admits Peterson has not responded to offer

Amir Khan business manager has admitted attempts to lure Lamont Peterson into a rematch are currently falling on deaf ears.

Khan, who lost his WBA and IBF light-welterweight titles in controversial circumstances to Peterson on December 10, withdrew his appeal to the latter governing body on the eve of Wednesday's proposed hearing.

The WBA have ordered a rematch between the pair but Peterson may choose to relinquish that belt and defend the IBF strap elsewhere.

And with plenty of quality opposition around in the light-welterweight division it seems the Peterson team is unimpressed with the approach from Team Khan, who have guaranteed the American 50 percent of worldwide revenues.

Public offer

"We're absolutely delighted with the WBA decision and obviously it's down to Peterson to make the rematch now," said Asif Vali.
"We've given the offer through the media, so they can't say there was no offer from the Khans. We gave the 50-50 offer and we can't be any fairer than to make public the offer we've given.

"We were supposed to have had a phone call from them this morning but there has been nothing as yet.

"If Peterson chooses to ignore the WBA and says 'I just want to fight for the IBF belt' then that's his choice. We've been fair in giving opportunities to the Peterson camp and we've been very humble, very fair in making the offers for a rematch, and unfortunately everything has been one-sided from us.

"We're the ones who have been doing all the negotiations and we're getting nothing back from the Peterson camp. So what we've done now is put the ball fully in their court.

"It's up to the Peterson camp now whether they take it. If not, we have our own plans now with Amir."

No-show

Vali added that Peterson's trainer and manager Barry Hunter failed to show at a pre-hearing meeting on Tuesday involving them, their American promoters Golden Boy and television paymasters HBO.

"Everything was on when we landed in New York with Amir and his father Shah last night," he continued.

"When Barry Hunter failed to show up to a meeting with us and HBO we felt 'is there any point in going to the IBF hearing?'

"Obviously we wanted to put our arguments over but then (referee) Joe Cooper was not going to be there and neither was Michael Welsh of the WBA.

"All our arguments and everything we put forward were going to be based on those two giving answers and if they weren't going to be there, then was there any point in attending this IBF hearing?

"It was going to be a one-way court system and we decided it wasn't the right thing to do and said 'okay, fine'."

Williamson on track

Lewis-Francis "feeling positive" after hamstring problem in 2011

Simeon Williamson hopes to put his injury nightmare behind him when he starts his bid for an Olympic place at the Aviva Grand Prix next month.

The 26-year-old, who beat Dwain Chambers to the 2009 UK 100 metres title, has missed virtually the entire last two years with a serious knee injury.

However the Londoner is now back and ready to compete against the likes of Asafa Powell and Kim Collins over 60m at the NIA in Birmingham on February 18.

He will also go up against Mark Lewis-Francis, one of his rivals for a place on the Great Britain team for this summer's Games on home soil.

"I'm raring to go this year," he said. "I had knee surgery which caused me to miss the 2010 season and most of 2011, but I'm fit and healthy now and I can't wait to get out there.

"The indoor season is really important to my development this year, it's been a while since I've really been out on the racing circuit but now that it's 2012 I want to be in top form and that's only going to come from getting out there and racing.

"I want to succeed in 2012, I want to do well at the Olympics, but I'm not really one for talking. I just want to get out there and show that I can do it with my performances on the track.

"I'm looking forward to competing at the Aviva Grand Prix, the crowd is always really enthusiastic and that makes a big difference. I'm pumped to get out on the track, I've been training with Asafa in Jamaica and I'm looking forward to racing him. Hopefully I can pull out a great performance."

Injury issues

Lewis-Francis is also coming back from injury issues - he hurt his hamstring at last year's Aviva Grand Prix and missed out on an individual place at the World Championships.

The 29-year-old has confirmed he will open his 2012 campaign at the Aviva International Match in Glasgow on January 28.

"I'm feeling positive about the year ahead. I had a good year in 2010, winning silver medals in the European Championships and the Commonwealth Games, but injury held me back in 2011," he said.

"I hope 2012 will be another good year and free of injury. In sport you never know what's going to happen next, so I'm feeling excited about what's to come."

Stamper to make his mark

After a superb 2011, Brit turns his attention to London

Taekwondo fighter Martin Stamper admits it feels as if his success over the past 12 months has somewhat slipped under the radar - but he is only really concerned about making headlines at the London Olympics.

Taekwondo's profile in the UK has grown markedly over the last year, with Sarah Stevenson - a bronze medallist at the 2008 Beijing Games - triumphing at the World Championships.

Stamper has enjoyed a superb 2011, winning gold at the US, German and British Opens, silver at the French and a World Championship bronze.

Although they were recognised when he was named GB Taekwondo's 2011 Olympic Athlete of the Year, the Liverpudlian believes his achievements have been overlooked at times.

Stamper is content to stay out of the limelight for now, though, knowing that if he can maintain his form, he is likely to make a big impression in the capital this summer.

"Last year, sometimes I would see the headlines and other people were getting them," said Stamper.

"I was performing amazingly and I would get a little bit frustrated that I wasn't getting the credit I deserved - that's what it felt like.

Plaudits

"But I thought to myself 'just keep going and keep winning medals.' If I get to the Olympics and I get the plaudits then, I don't mind too much.

"It is frustrating sometimes, but I think people have started to pick up on how well I have done now and if I can get to the Games and get a medal, then I really won't care."

Stamper is in pole position to be selected in the under-68kg category for London - a final decision will be made after the European Championships in Manchester in May - and the 25-year-old is confident he has what it takes to go all the way and claim an Olympic gold medal.

"We fight the best in the world in every competition, in every Open, and last year I think I beat three or four athletes who had been at Beijing, so it's looking good," Stamper said.

"There are two other people in my weight who are of a really good standard and I've beaten one of them.

"I don't think it (a gold medal) is beyond my grasp. I think if I perform to my best on the day, then I'll be pretty unbeatable."

Easy for Sharapova

Russian star defends depth of women's game after victory

Maria Sharapova dropped just two games in cruising into the third round of the Australian Open - and then found herself defending in the women's game.

Sharapova thrashed Jamie Hampton 6-0 6-1 on the Rod Laver Arena, a result which followed a similar demolition of Gisela Dulko in round one.

The second-round clash was closer than the scoreline suggests - Hampton reached deuce in four of the six games in the opening set - and Sharapova was irritated by suggestions there were too few serious challenges in the early rounds of grand slam events.

She said: "You never know what you're going to get. Sometimes we come out and we play three-set matches from the beginning and then it's a question of 'You're top five in the world, why is someone challenging you to three sets from the beginning?'

"I think it's just an excuse to make another story. That's really what it all comes down to.

Goal

"My goal is to go into a match and play my game. If I do it well enough and come out winning 6-0, 6-1, then I've done a good job."

Sharapova, champion in Melbourne back in 2008, also spoke of targeting this year's Olympic title in London.

She added: "This year is a big year for me because I'll be playing in the Olympics, which has been a dream of mine since I was a young girl.

"Growing up in Russia, tennis wasn't a big sport back then. It was all about being an Olympian, especially the winter sports.

"Fortunately we've been able to change that a little bit and tennis has become extremely popular back in Russia.

"This year to have a long grasscourt season will be fun."

Djokovic happy

Defending champ admits he wants to keep energy in the tank

Novak Djokovic stressed the importance of winning easily in the opening rounds after breezing past Santiago Giraldo at the Australian Open.

The defending champion has been untroubled so far in Melbourne - and that's just how he likes it.

Having won his first-round match for the loss of just two games, the world number one posted another easy win on Thursday, beating Colombian Santiago Giraldo 6-3 6-2 6-1.

Djokovic dropped his serve early on but that proved the only blip as he cruised through to a clash with Frenchman Nicolas Mahut.

He said: "I am trying to be physically fit and fresh for the upcoming rounds. The longer the tournament goes, the tougher it gets.

"Especially in the opening rounds you are trying to get the rhythm to play well in every match.

"You can't underestimate any opponent and Santiago is a tricky player. It was really important to win the first set."

Harrington playing waiting game

Despite a 15-month win drought and a fall to 89th in the world rankings, Padraig Harrington says he "expects" rather than hopes to win more majors.

"That's a big, strong word, but I do - yeah," the 40-year-old Dubliner said when asked at Fancourt in South Africa, where his season starts with the Volvo Golf Champions.

"I didn't have a great year last year, but it doesn't worry me in the greater scheme of things because I know you just can't win them every year.

"You have to sit there and be patient and wait for your turn - and, like 2007 and 2008, they all come at once."

Three years ago Harrington became the first European since 1906 to make a successful defence of the Open, then a month later became the first European to win the USPGA Championship since 1930.

Last season, though, the best he did in the majors was 45th at the US Open and missed cuts at the Masters and Open accelerated his slump down the rankings.

"When you look at Nick Faldo it took him 20-25 years (as a professional) to win six - the most by any European (of modern times).

"I'm not foolish to believe that because I won one in 2007 and two in 2008 I should win three in 2009, or even another one.

"They don't come around that easy. Even in my era the greatest player since I've been a pro - Tiger Woods - has not won one a year. There have been plenty of years he has not won any.

"People have this idea that just because you play well and you win one you should be doing that every year.

"That's the hardest thing. It definitely puts a big burden on anybody who wins a major, it really does. There's a lot of expectation that goes with it."

Now 15 months on from his last tournament victory, Harrington has done a lot of analysing things and still took positives out of last season.

"I sorted out a neck injury that plagued me for 10 years, then found something in my mental game and got to the bottom of something in my swing which had been annoying me for five years.

Judged by results

"But the reality is that we are judged by our results - I certainly do when I watch people playing sports - and I have to accept that results last year were poor."

What he must have found particularly disappointing on realising it was that on the PGA Tour in America he went backwards in every final round, whereas in 2008 he had gone forward every time.

With the world's top four of Luke Donald, Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy and Martin Kaymer all deciding not to play - they along with Woods start in Abu Dhabi next week - this week is a golden opportunity for him to stop the slide and start climbing again.

A field restricted to European Tour winners since the start of last season and those with 10 or more titles on the circuit is only 35 strong.

With the Ryder Cup in mind as much as anything else, Harrington desperately wants to be back in the world's top 64 for next month's Accenture world match play and the top 50 for the Cadillac world championship in Miami two weeks later.

A win on Sunday will achieve the first of those, although the cut-off point for Tucson is not for another three weeks.

Defending champion Paul Casey is another absentee, having dislocated his shoulder snowboarding.

Harrington does not criticise the world number 20 for taking to the slopes in Colorado.

"You wouldn't function as a person or a golfer if you don't live your life," he said.

"Any accident is unfortunate and some people may think why take the risk, but if you sat in a hotel room or at home looking at four walls you wouldn't be a very good golfer. You have to live your life.

"I don't ski because I didn't grow up skiing. If I had I would see no reason not to. I'm not going to take up a sport with inherent dangers, but you shouldn't stop doing the things you love doing."

Masters champion Charl Schwartzel is the only player in the game's top 25 taking part, but also present is Open champion Darren Clarke, three-major winner Ernie Els and past and present Ryder Cup captains Colin Montgomerie and Jose Maria Olazabal.

Monty targets Fancourt glory

Colin Montgomerie remains hungry for success as he sets out on his 25th full year on the European Tour.

The 48-year-old Scot walked into his pre-tournament press conference at the Volvo Golf Champions at the Fancourt Links in South Africa sporting a wide grin, a spring in his step and a brand new set of Callaway clubs.

Montgomerie is part of the 35-strong field restricted to those with 10 or more victories and all winners since the start of last season.

"I'm looking forward to trying to win," he said. "That's the goal and I've changed equipment to try to realise it.

"I had most of my success in the 90s with Callaway equipment," he said. "I won five Orders of Merit in a row with Callaway. I've seen the equipment and what's to come and made the decision to go back.

"It's a little bit back to the future really and I'm really excited about using the equipment this week in particular and onward.

Hole the putts

"I'm hitting the ball well, especially tee to green. The irons are good, too. I'm driving the ball safely and if I can hole the putts.... I know I have to putt very, very well to compete with the longer hitters out there. They have a huge advantage over me with some of the length that they hit the ball."

Montgomerie recalled playing with Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts, last season's biggest hitter in Europe, at the Spanish Open.

"I'm giving away 60 yards off the tee to him and afterwards I was drug-tested. I asked what for and they said it's for performance-enhancing drugs.

"Both of my playing partners just laughed - complete waste of time. It was embarrassing."

Monty is playing with 21-year-old golf prodigy Tom Lewis and will be keen to see the young Englishman up close for the first time.

"He's had a great start to his professional career and it's great that we have him in the field," Monty said.

"I'm looking forward to playing with Tom. I haven't played with him before and I'm looking forward to seeing how he gets around a golf course, especially one of this standing. And I look forward to the challenge of trying to finish ahead of him."

However, beating Lewis isn't just his goal. The Scot hopes he can win the tournament itself on a course he rates highly.

"This is an exceptional course," he said. "I heard it's ranked number one in South Africa, which really means it's ranked number one in Africa, and deservedly so. I think it's an exceptional golf course and a great design, and I enjoy the challenge of it.

"So, yeah, I'm looking forward to the year ahead and looking forward to trying to win. I really want to try and win out here again."

McCarthy - I'm livid

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy was left furious at an FA Cup elimination at the hands of Birmingham, whose manager, Chris Hughton, praised his team's spirit.

Wade Elliott's second-half effort settled what was, due to their Europa League commitments, the 36th game Championship outfit Birmingham have been involved in already this season.

They will now visit Sheffield United in the fourth round and will play a minimum of 58 matches during the current campaign.

In contrast, defeat for Wolves added to the problems facing McCarthy after his struggling Premier League club's winless run was extended.

McCarthy, who made 10 changes to his starting line-up, said: "I am very disappointed, angry, and the game hinged on us not marking from a corner so I'm disappointed with that.

"I've loads of complaints, not with them, but with us for not being good enough on the night. I've said my piece in the dressing room.

Positive

"I know winning games creates that winning mentality and I didn't want to lose tonight. I'm bitterly disappointed, I didn't want to lose. I'm angry about that.

"Yes, there are a lot of changes, some enforced, some my decision, but they are all Premier League players and the best of them was Matt Doherty, the one kid on the pitch.

"I know what they can all do individually, but collectively they've not done it as well as we could have done. I'm livid we've gone out."

But Hughton said: "All we are trying to do on our side is to be positive about everything.

"We have played on average eight more games than most teams in our division, but at this moment there is a real good spirit in the team.

"There is a group who want to play, no-one has come in and told me they are tired. That is where we are at this moment.

"We try to speak positively not to mention the amount of games. It is one after another. But I've got a group of lads who enjoy playing football."

Becks agrees Galaxy stay

Former England captain remains 'passionate' about LA

Former England captain David Beckham has re-signed for LA Galaxy on a two-year contract.

Sky Sports sources on Wednesday evening revealed the ex-Manchester United and Real Madrid star was set to agree a new deal with the MLS Cup winners after his previous terms expired in December.

And Beckham, who earlier in January snubbed a move to the wealthy and ambitious Paris Saint Germain, has now signed a contract which will keep him in America until 2014.

The 36-year-old said in a statement: "This was an important decision for me. I had many offers from clubs from around the world, however, I'm still passionate about playing in America and winning trophies with the Galaxy."

Beckham had in the past been linked with Tottenham and manager Harry Redknapp had invited the midfielder to train at the Premier League club.

Surprise

But he is thought to want to be at a club where he will be guaranteed first-team football ahead of potential participation in the 2012 Olympics.

Beckham initially made the surprise move to the Galaxy in 2007, when he signed a five-year deal after playing for Real, and he targeted improving the image of football in the USA.

The veteran still remains motivated towards those ambitions, as he said: "I've seen first-hand how popular soccer is now in the States and I'm as committed as ever to growing the game here.

"My family and I are incredibly happy and settled in America and we look forward to spending many more years here."

Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena is delighted Beckham has decided to stay and hopes the club can go on to further success.

Success

He said: "I am thrilled that David has chosen to rejoin the Galaxy, especially as he had numerous options where he could continue his career.

"I felt that he was one of the best players in all of MLS last season and we could not have achieved the success that we did without him.

"We look forward to trying to replicate that success this season with David once again in a Galaxy uniform."

Tim Leiweke, president of team owner AEG, is also pleased Beckham resisted the potential lure of the likes of PSG.

"There has been much speculation in the past four months on where David was going to play and we did not get caught up in this and remained focused on re-signing him," said Leiweke.

"David had many options and we are pleased he felt comfortable, not only with our organisation but also with Los Angeles, and will remain an important part of our club, our AEG family and our City."

ATLANTA (AP) — Joe Johnson scored 25 points, Ivan Johnson hit the clinching free throws with 4.6 seconds remaining and the Atlanta Hawks rallied from 18 points down to beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 93-91 on Saturday night.

Kevin Love missed a potential game-tying jump shot at the buzzer, but finished with 30 points and 13 rebounds for Minnesota, which was trying to win consecutive road games for the first time since last Feb. 7-8 at New Orleans and Houston.

Jeff Teague added 20 points and 10 assists for the Hawks, who overcame a season-high 20 turnovers to win their second straight game after losing Al Horford to a torn pectoral muscle that will sideline the starting center for three to four months.
Ricky Rubio had 18 points and 12 assists for Minnesota.

PACERS 97, CELTICS 83

BOSTON (AP) — Danny Granger scored 21 points and Indiana handed Boston its fourth straight loss.
Paul George and Darren Collison each scored 17 points and Roy Hibbert added 11 points and nine rebounds for the Pacers (9-3), who won their third straight. The Pacers improved to 5-0 at home, with four wins by double digits.

Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett both scored 21 points for the Celtics, but Brandon Bass was the only other Celtic in double figures with 10 points. Boston (4-7) fell to 1-4 on the road.
It was Indiana’s second win in two tries against the Celtics this season. Indiana won at Boston 87-74 on Jan. 6.

BULLS 77, RAPTORS 64

CHICAGO (AP) — Derrick Rose had 18 points and 11 assists, leading Chicago over Toronto.
Rose keyed a seven-point burst to open the fourth period, assisting on three straight field goals. John Lucas III hit a 3-pointer and Taj Gibson scored twice, opening up an 11-point lead for Chicago.

Carlos Boozer added 17 points and Luol Deng had 14 points for Chicago, which won its fifth straight and improved to a league-best 12-2. Taj Gibson scored nine of his 11 points in the fourth.

The Bulls are 5-0 at home for the first time since opening the 1996-97 season with seven straight wins at the United Center. Chicago has held its opponents to just 66.8 points game on its home court.

DeMar DeRozan and Leandro Barbosa scored 15 points each for Toronto, which dropped its fourth straight.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Kevin Durant scored 28 points, James Harden added 24 off the bench and Oklahoma City raced past New York for its sixth straight win.

Russell Westbrook was on his way to his sixth career triple-double with 21 points, eight rebounds and eight assists before coach Scott Brooks pulled his All-Stars with Oklahoma City leading by 30 points and nearly 3 minutes left in the third quarter.

New York played without Carmelo Anthony because of a sprained right ankle and injured left wrist, but it was the Knicks’ defense that was missing.

West-leading Oklahoma City scored 70 points in the first half and kept its starters on the bench throughout the fourth quarter for the third straight home game won in a blowout.

BOBCATS 112, WARRIORS 100

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Rookie Kemba Walker made the most of his first NBA start, scoring a career-high 23 points to lift Charlotte over Golden State.

With the Bobcats mired in a six-game losing streak, coach Paul Silas benched veteran Boris Diaw, saying he wanted to see a different look with a smaller lineup. Diaw, who had started a franchise-record 235 straight games, had scored just three points in the last two games and had drawn criticism from Silas.

David Lee had 21 points and 10 rebounds in the first half and finished with 24 points and 16 rebounds. Dorell Wright and Nate Robinson each added 12 points for the Warriors, who fell to 3-8.

GRIZZLIES 108, HORNETS 99

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Rudy Gay scored 23 points, Marc Gasol added 20 points and 11 rebounds and Memphis beat New Orleans.

Mike Conley had 17 points and seven assists, while Marreese Speights and Tony Allen finished with 12 points apiece.

Jarrett Jack led New Orleans with 23 points, while Jason Smith had 15, including 10 in the fourth quarter as the Hornets cut into the lead. Greivis Vasquez scored 14 points and handed out six assists. Marco Belinelli contributed 10 points.

HOUSTON (AP) — Kyle Lowry scored a season-high 33 points, Kevin Martin hit four free throws in the final seconds of overtime and Houston beat Portland.

Portland lost its third straight game.

LaMarcus Aldridge’s basket with 23 seconds left in regulation sent the game into overtime tie at 97.
Martin, who finished with 28 points, scored Houston’s final six points in overtime with a layup and four free throws over the final 32 seconds of the extra period.

Nicolas Batum had a season-high 29 points to lead Portland. Aldridge had 22 points and 10 rebounds.
JAZZ 107, NETS 94

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Al Jefferson scored 20 points and reserve C.J. Miles added 17 as Utah spoiled the return of former Jazz All-Star guard Deron Williams.

Williams was coming off a 35-point effort Friday in Phoenix but struggled in his first game back in Utah since his February trade.

He started 0 of 3, was just 2 of 12 at halftime and finished with 16 points on 3-of-15 shooting for New Jersey (3-10). Kris Humphries led the Nets with 18 points.
Utah (7-4) led 30-20 after one quarter and 57-40 at halftime.

Williams led Utah to four playoff berths but was traded just two weeks after a halftime spat with Hall of Fame coach Jerry Sloan.

MAVERICKS 99, KINGS 60

DALLAS (AP) — Jason Terry scored 21 points, Vince Carter added 16, and Dallas stretched its winning streak to five games with a rout of Sacramento.

Dirk Nowitzki contributed 14 points in a little over 20 minutes for the reigning NBA champs (8-5), who’ve won six in a row at home after a 0-2 start.

Marcus Thornton scored 14 points for the Kings (4-9), who’ve dropped four of five, including Friday night’s 103-89 defeat at Houston. Sacramento was making the fourth stop of a five-city road trip and struggled from the opening tip.

The Kings went 22 for 86 from the field (25.6 percent) against a Mavericks team that allowed the fewest points in franchise history.

76ERS 103, WIZARDS 90

WASHINGTON (AP) — Lou Williams scored 24 points and Andre Iguodala added a season-high 23 to lift Philadelphia over Washington.

Thaddeus Young tied his season high with 18 points and Jrue Holiday scored 13 for the 76ers, who have won eight of their last nine games.

Washington’s JaVale McGee scored a season-high 23 points and tied his career high with 18 rebounds. McGee made his first eight shots from the floor and finished 11 of 13. Nick Young also scored a season-high 27 points.

John Wall narrowly missed a triple-double. He scored 19 points with a season-high nine rebounds and tied his season high with nine assists, but also had a season-worst eight turnovers, seven in the first half.
